And just like that, David De Gea’s time with Manchester United is over. The Spain international moved to Old Trafford as a teenager back in 2011 installed with the hard task of replacing club icon Edwin van der Sar. He’s more than done that, however, and the Red Devils are now seeking a modern-day legend leave to pursue a new challenge elsewhere.

De Gea became a free agent last week when his contract expired.

“Now, it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings.

His maiden season in English football was a tough one, with the Spaniard struggling to cope in the Premier League.

But fortunately for United, De Gea’s move to Real Madrid collapsed that year. Instead of sulking he then knuckled down, signed a new contract and delivered his best performances for the club.

De Gea has, of course, struggled in recent years - which makes the timing of his departure right for all parties.
