Chelsea risk a transfer mistake worse than the ones they made with Kevin de Bruyne and Mohamed Salah if they decide to sell centre-back Levi Colwill this summer. Colwill impressed during a loan spell with Brighton last season, with the Seagulls now desperately attempting to snap the 20-year-old up on a permanent basis.

Chelsea have had huge success in the past with their model of developing the brightest talents from across Europe before shipping them out on loan. If those players have been deemed to lack the necessary ability to become regular first-team players at Stamford Bridge, the Blues have often moved them on permanently in return for a transfer fee.

The Blues will have learnt lessons after giving up the opportunity to reap the rewards of De Bruyne and Salah’s progression to the top of the game. But there is no guarantee they won’t make the same mistake under Todd Boehly’s regime.

Colwill had already starred for Huddersfield in the Championship as a teenager throughout the 2021/22 campaign and helped the team reach the play-off final. And he has also been in imperious form for England under-21s this summer at the European Championship to help his country reach the final.
