Erik ten Hag may have already found his next Manchester United captain to replace Harry Maguire after Mason Mount's arrival at the club's training ground proved he has a leader in waiting. The Dutchman is bringing major changes to the way the club is run on and off the pitch, and the expected departure of Maguire this summer would leave a vacancy for the club to appoint a new captain.

The 29-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford since Ten Hag's arrival in June last year, making only eight Premier League starts for the Red Devils last season.

And the captaincy could be the next big decision he is faced with. When Maguire hasn't featured in the starting XI, Ten Hag has opted to hand the armband to Bruno Fernandes.

An experienced international with Argentina and a well-respected member of the squad, it was his actions when Mount turned up at their Carrington training complex which caught the eye - and Ten Hag would have been made aware too.

But those at the club will be confident that the nervous defender who endured a horrendous afternoon at Brentford 10 months ago has morphed into a more composed player under Ten Hag's tutelage.
