Last summer, Manchester United overpaid for Antony. That’s something the club recognised at the time, insisting they forked out £86million because of the player the Brazil international can be in the future - rather than the one he is now. And they’re now seemingly ready to make a similar investment in young striker Rasmus Hojlund, who has now apparently been identified as Erik ten Hag’s leading target.

Manchester United were initially told it would take a fee in the region of £50m to acquire Antony from Ajax last summer.

Few had heard of the Denmark international 12 months ago, when the striker left Sturm Graz for Serie A side Atalanta.

Atalanta have previously made it clear they’d want £86m to let their No 9 depart, just a year on from his arrival.

If Hojlund does join United and immediately produces the goods, then Ten Hag is unlikely to care.

Regarding Hojlund, meanwhile, Louis Saha recently praised the youngster - but also expressed a belief his side should be going for Harry Kane.
